Rubbia al Colle

SUVERETO

Rubbia al Colle is located in Suvereto DOCG, in the hearth of Tuscan Maremma, where the bright green of vineyards contrasts with the deeper green of olive trees, cypresses and holms. There are soils that allow Sangiovese to be the real protagonist, together with the other international red grapes that are also famous in the area.
In the hilly area of La Rubbia we planted our vineyards in clay soils able to store water during dry summer time. On the foothill, at Le Pulledre, soils are still rich in clay without skeleton but with draining deep sand layers. On the flatland at Casalappi soils are very heavy, still rich in clay but also silty able to confer vigor and feritily to vineyards.

Rubbia al Colle

OUR HYPOGEUM WINERY

The winery of Rubbia al Colle is located in the ancient property Le Pulledre. We built the winery in the hearth of an hill, where now the red wines of Rubbia al Colle mature. A winery with an hypogeum architecture, made by local materials, in total respect of the original structure of the Estate. Mediterranean maquis grows up on the roof of the winery and water, sun and rocks are primary elements of the winery, while clay has become the hearth of it.

Territory

Maremma is an area of huge contrasts: hills and sea, game and vegetables, oil and sheep’s cheeses in the hinterland while Palamita, pink shrimp on the coast. Can this variegated panorama be contained in just one wine? We want to try!

The harvest

If Maremma Area in Livorno province is the soal of this wine, the three grapes that compose it shape its character. We harvest them almost at the same time:

  • Petit Verdot of hills with early ripening
  • Syrah of of foothill where the soils are more humid
  • Sangiovese of the warm but windy areas closer to the sea

White wine making of a red wine

The long maceration on the skins is very popular today in white wine making. This red wine, on the other hand, is born with different objectives: a red vinification carried out almost like a white one. Our goal is to work on delicate extraction of tannins preserving the aromatic appearance of the grapes, with at most two days of maceration of the skins at low temperature. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation the wine age in oak barrels for several months to fix and balance the colour and the aromatic and gustatory complexity of this interesting blend.
The result is a bright red wine but not too intense, with slightly tannin and a rich and evolved aroma of red, balsamic and spicy fruit.

Vigna Usilio
SUVERETO DOCG Sangiovese

There is a micro vineyard, the highest cultivated with Sangiovese of the entire Val di Cornia, it is exposed to the sun for long hours. Thus in Usil, the Etruscan god of the sun, it has been dedicated the most noble expression of Sangiovese from Tenuta Rubbia al Colle.

Le pulledre
TOSCANA IGT

The name. ‘Loc Poggetto alle Pulledre 212’ is what is written on the plaque fixed on the ancient cottage of the property. The cottage was used as farmers’ house, small winery but also horses stable. With the name ‘Le Pulledre’ we dedicate this wine to the farm, as symbol of a farmer culture and history to ennoble.
The wine. Every year we taste all the wines that rest in our barriques and we pick up what we believe to be the best to be assembled together. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Cigliegiolo, Syrah and Petit verdot are than assembled in a single oak barrel of 25 Hl where wines of different grape varieties have five months to amalgamate themselves and give born to Le Pulledre.
The idea. Different soils, different vineyards, italic and international grapes, for a wine that ends to be polyhedral that aims to express the best of Rubbia al Colle Estate year after year.

OUR CLAY
BARREL

As an ancient material used in the past by Etruscans, clay is for us at Rubbia al Colle what we call ‘Barricoccio’: the barrique made of clay. It is a kind of container that it didn’t exist but we aimed to create, after many experiments, together with Furnace Masini from Impruneta (Florence). In Barricoccio our Sangiovese matures together with “its lie” that is constantly moving thanks to the shape of this container and it remains at a very constant temperature. This happens all the yearlong because clay is an insulated material able to maintain the fruity features typical of Sangiovese.
